The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, today (February 25) officiated at the plaque-unveiling and opening ceremony of Tung Tau Community Hall in Wong Tai Sin to mark its official completion and commissioning.

Located in Tung Tau Community Centre, the community hall is equipped with a multi-purpose hall with a seating capacity of 450 people, a conference room and a stage meeting room as well as a dressing room. Suitable for holding various kinds of cultural and recreational activities, the community hall is expected to be well received by local organisations and residents.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Tan said the Government has all along been encouraging residents to participate in community activities with a view to enhancing their living standards as well as promoting a harmonious community. The community centres and halls under the Home Affairs Department (HAD) suitably provide a comfortable and safe environment for local organisations to hold diversified cultural and recreational activities.

She also thanked the Wong Tai Sin District Council (WTSDC) and relevant government departments for their concerted efforts resulting in the hall's successful opening. She hoped local organisations could make good use of the community centres and community halls in the district and provide more local activities and recreational programmes to enrich people's living quality as well as enhance their sense of belonging to the community.

Other guests present at the opening ceremony included the WTSDC Chairman, Mr Li Tak-hong; the Deputy Director of Housing (Development and Construction), Ms Ada Fung; the District Officer (Wong Tai Sin), Mr William Shiu; and the Chairman of District Facilities Management Committee under the WTSDC, Mr Kan Chi-ho.

In addition to the ceremony, there were singing and martial arts performances staged by the Wong Tai Sin Children's Choir, the Wong Tai Sin District Arts Council and the Wong Tai Sin District Recreation and Sports Council to celebrate the venue's opening.

Occupying an area of about 1.12 hectares, the Tung Tau Community Centre is situated at the junction of Tung Lei Road and Lok Sin Road, and adjacent to the soon-to-be-completed Tung Wui Estate. Built by the Housing Department, the community centre is managed by the HAD and the Social Welfare Department. With a modern and environmentally friendly design, the centre's green roof not only beautifies the environment but also provides a cooling and energy-saving effect.

The community hall, which is now on a trial run, will be open to booking by district organisations from April 1. For enquiries, please contact the Wong Tai Sin District Office at 3143 1143 during office hours.

With the completion of the Tung Tau Community Centre, there are seven community centres or halls for public use in Wong Tai Sin District. The others are Wong Tai Sin Community Centre, Choi Wan Estate Community Centre, Chuk Yuen Estate Community Centre, Fung Tak Estate Community Centre, Tsz Wan Shan (South) Estate Community Centre and Tsz Wan Shan Community Hall.
