The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Cluster Chief Executive of Hong Kong West Cluster, Dr Luk Che-chung, welcomed the Budget proposal regarding the approval of the redevelopment plan for Queen Mary Hospital (QMH). He thanked the Government for its support for the hospital and public healthcare services. The plan allows for modernising the facilities of the hospital to cope with the growing clinical service and teaching demands.

     A dedicated committee comprising representatives from the Hospital Authority Head Office (HAHO), the University of Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and various departments of the hospital will be set up to work out a detailed and thorough redevelopment plan to ensure that the new facilities can cater for both clinical and teaching demands.  The Planning and Commissioning Department of QMH will deploy extra manpower for the implementation of the plan.

     The project's scope covers the demolition of several outdated buildings in phases.  Proposed key facilities are:

* A&E Department
* Operating Theatres
* Clinical Oncology
* Cardiac and Cardiothoracic Services
* Intensive Care Unit
* Lecture theaters and teaching facilities

     Construction work will commence in phases. The hospital will maintain normal operation during construction.  QMH will strive to minimise the impact of the work on patients and the neighbourhood.  QMH will consult service users, nearby residents, Central and Western District Council and Southern District Council on the redevelopment plan.

     The plan will be an essential part of the hospital's modernisation programme.  Regarding those buildings not currently included in the redevelopment plan, QMH will continue to upgrade their facilities to meet service needs.
