CE invites Audrey Eu to televised debate
****************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, today (May 20) extended an invitation to the Leader of the Civic Party and the spokesperson of the "five district referendum movement", the Honourable Audrey Eu, to join him in a live televised debate next month on the 2012 constitutional reform package, so that members of the public may better understand the arguments for and against the package and judge for themselves.

A translation of the letter is as follows:

Dear Ms Eu,

Hong Kong's constitutional development has come to a critical moment. The Legislative Council will soon make a historic decision on the methods for selecting the Chief Executive and for forming the Legislative Council in 2012. Now is the time to narrow differences and build consensus. The mainstream view of the community is in favour of the approval of the government's package by the Legislative Council to allow our electoral system to move forward and to pave the way for implementing universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017 and the Legislative Council election in 2020. However, the Civic Party and the "five district referendum movement" of which you are the spokesperson are against the passage of the government's package.

To allow the public to better understand the arguments for and against the Council's approval of the government's package and judge for themselves, I would like to invite you to join me in a live televised debate, with proposed arrangement as follows:

Time: June 17 (Thursday) from 6.30pm to 7.30pm
Venue: Conference Hall, Central Government Offices New Annexe
Rules: An independent person will serve as the debate moderator; there will be no on-site audience and no questions from any third parties, so that the debate will not be unduly disturbed; the two participants will give opening remarks, to be followed by an exchange of questions and answers before making their concluding remarks. The details may be further discussed by the two sides.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Donald Tsang
