SLW's remarks on labour initiatives in the Budget
*************************************************

The following is the transcript (English portion) of the remarks made by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at a media stand-up after attending a radio phone-in programme today (February 27):

Reporter: ... some said the number of jobs created is exaggerated?

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare: No, we are not exaggerating anything at all. In fact, we are talking about a combination of training opportunities and job opportunities. They are jobs, real jobs, construction jobs, programme assistant jobs and so on. In fact, of the 44,000 jobs/training opportunities, a fair proportion of them are real jobs, for example, middle-aged programme for the people with problems. They are not getting jobs and so on. For youngsters, we are talking about 35,000. But even for youngsters, they (training opportunities) will lead on to jobs eventually if they do perform in the job/training programme.
