Urban Property Management Limited was fined $30,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (August 20) for a violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on September 12, 2006 at a workplace in Central. A worker was electrocuted while replacing fluorescent tube fitting.
According to Sections 6(1) and 6(2)(a) of the ordinance, employers must provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risks to the health of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
