The Home Affairs Bureau and the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) jointly organised a TV variety show "Beijing 2008 Olympic Games One-year Countdown" at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza, Tsim Sha Tsui, today (August 8), in celebration of the Beijing Olympic Games next year and the staging of the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong.
The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, officiated at the countdown ceremony. Other guests included the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Gao Siren; President of the Equestrian Committee (Hong Kong) of Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang; President of the SF&OC, Mr Timothy Fok; Chairman, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mr John Chan; and Chairman, Board of Governors of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Equestrian Events Hong Kong Fund, Ms Elsie Leung.
Produced and broadcast by Television Broadcasts Limited, the show featured Hong Kong's elite athletes and performances by youth and cultural groups, singers and entertainers.
Simultaneous countdown activities at Tiananmen Square in Beijing and performances by ethnic minorities, district organisation and artistes in front of the Olympic countdown clock in Kowloon Park were transmitted live in the show.
Several hundred guests attended tonight's show, including legislators, district councillors, representatives of sports and district organisations and donors to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Equestrian Events Hong Kong Fund.
