The Government announced today (August 25) the appointment of the chairman and members of the Legal Aid Services Council.
The Chief Executive has appointed Mr Paul Chan Mo-po as the new chairman of the council, and Miss Corinne Marie D'Almada Remedios, Mr Tik Chi Yuen and Dr Jimmy Wong Chi-ho as new members of the council.
The Chief Executive has also re-appointed Mr Andrew Bruce, Dr Andrew Chuang Siu-leung, Mr Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, Mr Billy Ma Wah-yan, and Mr Ng Shui-lai as members of the council.
The term of all appointments is two years, starting from September 1, 2006.
Section 5(1) of the Legal Aid Services Council Ordinance (Cap. 489) stipulates that the council shall consist of a lay chairman, four lay members, two solicitors and two barristers, all to be appointed by the Chief Executive. The Director of Legal Aid is an ex-officio member of the council.
Following is a brief biography of the new chairman and new members:
Mr Paul Chan Mo-po is the President of the Council of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member of various advisory bodies including the Commission on Strategic Development and the Transport Advisory Committee.
Miss Corinne Marie D'Almada Remedios is a barrister and a member of the Barristers Disciplinary Tribunal Panel.
Mr Tik Chi Yuen is the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Society for the Aged. He is a member of the Commission on Poverty and the Commission on Strategic Development.
Dr Jimmy Wong Chi-ho is the President of the Tung Chun Group. He is a member of the Social Welfare Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee of the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged.
The council is responsible for overseeing the administration of the legal aid services provided by the Legal Aid Department and advising the Government on legal aid policy.
