The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, has appointed an Independent Expert Group to evaluate current highway safety measures and make recommendations for enhancement, having regard to the Tuen Mun Road traffic incident of July 10.
A spokesman for the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau said today (July 15) that the Administration was very concerned about the serious traffic incident and set up the Independent Expert Group upon the instruction of the Chief Executive.
The Expert Group will examine various safety aspects, including highway design and traffic management, with a view to preventing similar catastrophes in the future.
Dr Cheng Hon-kwan, Chairman of the Transport Advisory Committee, will chair the Expert Group. The other members are Mr Edmund Leung Kwong-ho, past president of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, and Dr Wong Sze-chun, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Hong Kong.
It will submit a report to the Chief Executive in three to four months. The report will be made public.
The Police, as part of its ongoing investigation, will pursue issues regarding the causes and liability of persons involved in the Tuen Mun Road incident, the spokesman said.
