CAD investigates case of runway incident
****************************************
A departing flight aborted take off shortly after its commencement of take-off roll at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) yesterday (December 23) night because another aircraft was taxiing across the far end of the same runway. No one was injured and the operation at HKIA was not affected by the incident.

"At around 9.06pm yesterday, a Hong Kong Airlines A333 passenger aircraft (flight number: HX709) from Hong Kong to Bali, Indonesia, was preparing for take off on Runway 07R at the HKIA after receiving the clearance from an Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO). Shortly after the A333 aircraft commenced its take-off roll, the pilot of an arriving Cathay Pacific Airways B748 freighter aircraft (flight number: CX071) from Alaska, the United States, informed the ATCO concerned that his aircraft was crossing the same runway and has not yet completely vacated  the runway. The ATCO concerned immediately instructed the A333 aircraft to abort take off. According to preliminary information, the Hong Kong Airlines aircraft had just commenced its roll for several tens of metres before terminating the takeoff and the Cathay Pacific Airways freighter aircraft was at the other end of the runway, which is 3 800 metres long.  The two aircraft has no risk of collision. Subsequently, the A333 aircraft departed for its destination as planned," a spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said.

This runway incident is being investigated by the CAD in accordance with the laid down procedure.
