******************************************************************************************
The Electronic Health Record Sharing System (eHRSS) developed and operated by the Food and Health Bureau (FHB) and the Hospital Authority (HA) has won the Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance (APICTA) Award (Government and Public Sector) at the 2017 APICTA Awards.

The Commissioner for the Electronic Health Record of the FHB, Ms Ida Lee, and the Head of Information Technology and Health Informatics of the HA, Dr Cheung Ngai-tseung, received the award in Dhaka, Bangladesh, yesterday (December 10).

"The eHRSS is an important component of Hong Kong's ongoing healthcare development. It helps promote public-private collaboration, facilitate continuity of care and improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare services. We are glad that the eHRSS is gaining increasing acceptance in Hong Kong. We hope that more and more patients and healthcare providers (HCPs) will register with the eHRSS so as to enjoy the many benefits that it provides," Ms Lee said.

"The eHRSS has been designed to ensure a high level of system quality and stability to support the 24/7 healthcare environment. Registration by patients and HCPs is voluntary, free and easy. The user interface for the healthcare professionals has been seamlessly adapted to meet clinical needs. We also put particular emphasis on safeguarding system security, patient privacy and data integrity," Dr Cheung added.

The Government-led, territory-wide eHRSS was launched in March 2016. With patients' informed consent, HCPs in both the public and private sectors can view and share their electronic health and medical records in the provision of healthcare services on a need-to-know basis. As at early December 2017, over 630 000 patients had already registered with the system. As for HCPs, the HA, the Department of Health and over 1 400 private HCPs (including all of the 12 local private hospitals) had joined the system. Stage Two Development of the eHRSS commenced in July 2017 to bring greater benefits to users. The major areas of work include broadening the scope of sharable data under the system, enhancing patients' choice over the scope of data sharing, and facilitating their access to some of the data in the system.

APICTA is an alliance of the information and communications technology (ICT) organisations representing their respective 16 economies. Debuted in 2001 as a flagship annual event of APICTA, the APICTA Awards aims at increasing ICT awareness, stimulating ICT innovation and creativity, and assisting in bridging the digital divide in the region. The Government and Public Sector Award commends outstanding ICT innovation dedicated to delivering improved government and public sector services or other electronic initiatives to the community.
