Hong Kong teams triumph in International Physics Olympiad and Mathematical Olympiad (with photos)

The IPhO was held from July 16 to 24, with the participation of 395 gifted students in physics from 86 countries or regions. The Hong Kong team won two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals. The gold medallists were Li Shing-yan (Secondary 5) from STFA Leung Kau Kui College and Li Yang-hong (Secondary 6) from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School. The silver medallist was Rahul Arya (Grade 12) from King George V School. The bronze medallists were Chau Chun-wang (Secondary 4) from St Margaret's Co-educational English Secondary and Primary School and Lai Ka-ching (Secondary 5) from CCC Ming Yin College.
The IMO was held from July 16 to 23 and 615 mathematically gifted students from 111 countries or regions met together to compete for medals. The Hong Kong team won one gold medal, one silver medal, three bronze medals and one honourable mention. Samuel Lee (Secondary 6) from CNEC Christian College garnered a gold medal and Kwok Man-yi (Secondary 6) from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School got the silver medal. Yu Hoi-wai (Secondary 6) from La Salle College, Jeff York Ye (Grade 12) from GT (Ellen Yeung) College and Alvin Tse (Grade 10) from Yew Chung International School - Secondary were each awarded a bronze medal. In addition, Arvin Leung (Grade 12) of Diocesan Boys' School obtained an honourable mention. Amongst the 62 girl contestants, Kwok Man-yi was ranked the second.
The Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, today (July 24)congratulated the Hong Kong teams on their outstanding performance in the two competitions. He said, "The good results achieved by the Hong Kong teams showcase their ability in mathematics and physics. The Education Bureau (EDB) will continue to support and nurture more students with talent and interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to enrich the talent pool, and hence enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong in the international arena."
The main objectives of the two Olympiads are to promote mathematics and science education, foster friendly relationships and co-operation among mathematicians and scientists all over the world, and inspire and nurture the development of young people gifted in mathematics and physics.
The two teams sent by the EDB had performed outstandingly in the local selection contests and subsequently received training in a series of enhancement programmes jointly organised by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) and the IMO Hong Kong Committee (for the IMO) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (for the IPhO).
The success of the Hong Kong teams this year once again demonstrated the fruitful collaboration among different parties in nurturing gifted students in Hong Kong. The concerted efforts from all parties will continue to further promote mathematics and science education and identify more talents.
