******************************************************************************************
The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited elderly households and needy families in Tai Po District under the "Celebrations for All" project today (June 16).

Accompanied by the District Officer (Tai Po), Ms Andy Lui, and the Chairman of the Tai Po District Council, Mr Cheung Hok-ming, as well as volunteers, Mr Cheung visited three families in Sam Mun Tsai to learn about their living conditions and their needs. He also distributed gift packs to them to share the joy of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Joining him were the Director of Administration, Ms Kitty Choi; the Director of Home Affairs, Miss Janice Tse; the Head of the Efficiency Unit, Mr Kim Salkeld; Deputy Director of Administration Mr Bobby Cheng; Deputy Director of Home Affairs Mr Patrick Li; and Assistant Director of Home Affairs Ms Anna Chor.

The project is expected to reach 300,000 households of elderly people and families in need through home visits covering 18 districts and senior government officials have taken part in the visits since the project's launch in May, Mr Cheung said.

He said that through the visits, he hoped to share with the disadvantaged the joy of the 20th anniversary and extend his warmest wishes to them.

Stressing that poverty alleviation, elderly care and support for the disadvantaged are at the top of the current-term Government’s agenda, he pointed out that the earnest efforts of the current-term Government on these fronts are reflected in the rise in expenditure.

This year, the estimated recurrent government expenditure on social welfare is $66.2 billion, a 55 per cent increase over the level four years ago, he continued.

Glad to see that there are over 300 non-government organisations taking part in home visits in different districts, he said he hoped that different sectors of the community will continue to foster the spirit of solidarity and join hands in building a caring and inclusive society.
