LegCo Subcommittee on Children's Rights visits Sha Tsui Correctional Institution (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Subcommittee on Children's Rights visited Sha Tsui Correctional Institution (STCI) under the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (May 5) to better understand the operations of the Institution.
 
     Members first received a briefing by the representatives of CSD on the detention centre programme, which emphasises strict discipline, hard work and counselling. Members then toured around STCI and observed inmates receiving foot drill and physical training. During the visit, Members took the opportunity to chat with an inmate to learn more about his daily life and needs.
 
     Sha Tsui Correctional Institution is a minimum security institution for young male inmates under the Detention Centres Ordinance (Cap. 239).
 
     The Subcommittee on Children's Rights will discuss issues relating to the rights of children in Correctional Institution at its meeting on May 23. The agenda of the meeting can be found at the following website: www.legco.gov.hk/yr16-17/english/hc/sub_com/hs101/agenda/hs10120170523.htm.

     Members participating in the visit included the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Children's Rights, Dr Fernando Cheung; the Deputy Chairman, Mr Shiu Ka-chun; and Subcommittee members, Mr Kwok Wai-keung, Mr Ip Kin-yuen, Dr Elizabeth Quat and Dr Lau Siu-lai.
