SHA visits Service Corps delegates in Meizhou (with photos)
***********************************************************
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (March 28) visited Hong Kong Service Corps delegates who are providing teaching support in primary schools in Meizhou, Guangdong Province.

In the morning, Mr Lau met with five delegates from the second semester of Phase VII of the Service Corps programme at Meinan Town Centre Primary School, Xiyang Town Centre Primary School and Bingcun Town Centre Primary School, where he also observed the delegates' classes and visited their dormitories. After that, Mr Lau had lunch with the delegates to learn more about their daily lives and voluntary work.

Mr Lau praised the delegates for their courage and devotion to serving others. He said that it was not easy for them to voluntarily leave their comfort zone in Hong Kong for villages with less favourable living conditions in Guangdong Province to provide services and pass on knowledge to local students. He expressed the hope that the delegates would seize the opportunity to spend quality time with their students and teach them more about the world during their service period of nearly six months.

Mr Lau said he understood that the voluntary work is full of challenges, as the delegates need to teach various subjects as well as arrange extra-curricular activities for their students under a completely different living environment. He encouraged the delegates to perform well in their voluntary work and show the compassion of Hong Kong people by upholding their spirit to serve and making concerted efforts to face difficulties. He said he believed that the experiences in their service would bring them precious memories and serve as a driving force for growth in the future.

Established in 2011, the Service Corps programme aims to promote youth development and volunteerism. The programme has been extended to Phase VII and has recruited over 110 young people, including working youths, secondary school and university graduates and tertiary students, who have gone to Shaoguan and Meizhou in Guangdong Province for voluntary teaching service.

Mr Lau will return to Hong Kong this afternoon after concluding his visit.
