The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The six-week 2016 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students concluded today (July 8).

The 26 students participating in the programme received a certificate of participation from the Secretary General of the Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen, at the closing ceremony.  Mr Chen said, "Students have to develop their knowledge, skills and attitude to meet with life challenges.  The internship programme gives students a taste of what starting a career in the public sector would be like.  I urge interns to consolidate the experience gained, set their goals in life and work arduously at them."

Student representatives also gave a sharing on their experience gained.  One of the students said, "During the internship, I was assigned to attach to two divisions of the Secretariat.  The Secretariat staff have impressed me with their professionalism and impartiality in serving the Council."

"The discussions with Legislative Council (LegCo) Members also allowed me to understand that they perform their duties of monitoring the work of the Government and make voting decisions for the best interest of society," another student said.

During the internship which started on May 30, in addition to attaching to various divisions of the Secretariat, the students met with the President of LegCo, 16 LegCo Members, and Heads of Divisions of the Secretariat.  They also observed meetings of LegCo and its committees as well as experienced the passage of a bill in a mock Council debate.

First launched by the Secretariat in 2013, the internship programme is held annually during the summer vacation of students.
