The Commissioner of Police, Mr Lo Wai-chung, led a delegation to visit Australia between June 11 and 17 to take part in the Pearls in Policing Conference 2016 and meet Australian law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in Canberra.
Thirty-five law enforcement leaders and academics from 21 countries/areas and four international organisations attended the 10th Pearls in Policing Conference in Sydney between June 11 and 15.
Pearls is an international think-tank where participants share ideas, experiences and knowledge in a purposely small-scale, collegial environment.
With its annual policing conference in June, Pearls provides a unique forum where police leaders can discuss and debate the key challenges of policing at all levels. ˇ§Uniting Global Law Enforcementˇ¨ is the theme of the annual conference this year.
Through intensive debates, working groups and peer-to-peer consultation, Mr Lo exchanged insights with other law enforcement leaders on counter-terrorism, cyber crime, law and order and international cooperation, and discussed and explored the ways forward of policing.
Mr Lo also met with Commissioners of LEAs of Australia, New Zealand and Colombia respectively to strengthen cooperation and partnership. Having reached the consensus with the Colombia National Police in the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on combating cross-jurisdictional crimes, both forces made a big leap forward in the bilateral police-to-police cooperation.
Mr Lo also visited Austalian LEAs including Australian Federal Police and Australian Crime Commission in Canberra to discuss future challenges and measures to tackle cross-jurisdictional crime including counter-terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering, cyber crime, etc. All parties agreed to enhance cooperation in order to stand ready to seize new opportunity and meet new challenges, particularly cross-jurisdictional organised crime.
The delegation returned to Hong Kong today (June 18).
