**********************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 15) the June 2016 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains three feature articles entitled "Estimation of Hong Kong Residents Usually Staying in the Guangdong Province", "The Cultural and Creative Industries in Hong Kong" and "Trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China".

"Estimation of Hong Kong Residents Usually Staying in the Guangdong Province"

Given the geographical proximity and convenient transport network, there are especially close ties between the Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. A significant number of Hong Kong residents are staying in the Guangdong Province for a prolonged period or travelling frequently between the two places. The C&SD estimated that in mid-2015, around 516 000 Hong Kong residents usually stayed in the Guangdong Province. This feature article gives a brief account of the estimation methodology and presents the estimation results for mid-2013 to mid-2015.

"The Cultural and Creative Industries in Hong Kong"

The cultural and creative industries are among the most dynamic sectors in Hong Kong, contributing to both economic growth and job creation. The cultural and creative industries comprise a set of knowledge-based activities that deploy creativity and intellectual capital as primary inputs and deliver goods and services with cultural, artistic and creative contents. This feature article provides the latest statistics of the cultural and creative industries in Hong Kong in 2014.

"Trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China"

Hong Kong has maintained a close trading relationship with the mainland of China (the Mainland) for many years. In the past decade, the Mainland was Hong Kong's largest destination of re-exports and supplier of imports, on average accounting for 52.3% and 46.8% of Hong Kong's total re-exports and imports respectively. Since 2005, the Mainland had replaced the United States of America to become the largest destination of Hong Kong's domestic exports, accounting for 40.2% on average of total domestic exports over the last decade.

This feature article analyses the performance and highlights the salient features of trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland during the period from 2006 to 2015.
