SED visits Shenzhen (with photos)
*********************************

The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (June 14) went to Shenzhen to attend a regular working meeting with officials of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau and visit two hi-tech enterprises for exchanges on technology education and life planning education.

Mr Ng first attended a working meeting with the Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, Ms Guo Yurong. Officials of both places exchanged views on education issues of mutual concern, including co-operation opportunities in respect of basic education, sister schools and life-planning education.

Mr Ng then visited two hi-tech enterprises, namely Huawei and Tencent.

"In recent years, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has made every effort to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills for application in these aspects. We also put more emphasis on life-planning education to help students identify their own interests early as well as future development opportunities. The two initiatives can complement each other in the new era of innovative technology and e-commerce," Mr Ng said.

"So far this school year, the Business-School Partnership Programme of the Education Bureau has engaged over 125 companies and non-governmental organisations in organising some 740 activities for about 220,000 students. In addition to Hong Kong enterprises, many Mainland enterprises and research institutions have been among the top in the world in the areas of technology and innovation. The bureau will explore more observation and learning opportunities for Hong Kong students."

Officials accompanying the SED to visit Shenzhen included the Deputy Secretary for Education, Mrs Hong Chan Tsui-wah; the Administrative Assistant to the SED, Mr Edward Yu; and the Principal Assistant Secretary (School Development), Ms Teresa Chan. They will return to Hong Kong this evening.
