Company and its director fined for wage offence
***********************************************

Walter Ma & Company Limited was fined $25,000 at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts on June 10 for failure to pay wages and annual leave amounting to about $34,300 and $1,500 respectively to an employee within seven days after the termination of employment, as required by the Employment Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

A director of the said company was also prosecuted for the allegation that the wage offence was committed with her consent, connivance or to be attributable to her neglect. The director concerned was convicted and fined $30,000 on the same day.

"The judgment would disseminate a strong message to all employers, directors, managers, secretaries and other similar officers of companies that they have to pay wages to employees in accordance with the Employment Ordinance," a spokesman for the Labour Department said.

"The Labour Department does not tolerate the above offences and will spare no effort in enforcing the law and protecting employees' statutory rights," the spokesman added.
