EDB's response to Report of the Investigation Committee for the CityU Sports Hall Incident
************************************************************

In response to media enquiries about the Report of the Investigation Committee for the CityU Sports Hall Incident, a spokesman for the Education Bureau (EDB) said today (June 10):

"The EDB has received from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) the Report of the Investigation Committee for the CityU Sports Hall Incident, which CityU has just made public.

"The EDB will study the report carefully. Because of the technical nature of most of its content, we will pass the report to the Buildings Department and the University Grants Committee (UGC) Secretariat for follow-up as appropriate.

"We reiterate that the EDB attaches great importance to the safety of the students and the entire staff. The Secretary for Education observed the scene of the incident in person immediately after it happened and held a meeting with the top management of CityU. He also requested that the university investigate the incident thoroughly and submit a report.

"In addition, the UGC has written to the eight UGC-funded universities to ask them to carry out full inspections of their campus buildings, especially those with green roofs, in order to ensure structural safety. We note that the report has made a series of recommendations to CityU on how to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. We believe the UGC will examine these recommendations carefully."
