***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The 2016 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students commenced today (May 30) to provide training opportunities for students to better understand the constitutional functions of the Legislative Council (LegCo) and acquire hands-on experience in the support services for LegCo provided by the Secretariat.

At the orientation session held this morning, Secretary General of the Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen, said, "One of the features of the internship programme is the ample opportunities for students to interact with Members of different political parties. We hope that the insights that students gain in the programme will inspire their ambition in politics. Students are also encouraged to translate their internship experience into actions that advance the development of democracy in Hong Kong."

"I await eagerly the coming six-week programme. Seeing behind-the-scenes the daily operation of the Secretariat and getting to know its working relationship with Members are a learning experience that will broaden our horizons," a student said during the orientation session.

From today to 8 July 2016, 17 undergraduate students and 10 sub-degree students, nominated by 17 tertiary institutions, will be attached to various divisions of the Secretariat, meet with the President and Members of LegCo, and observe meetings of LegCo and its committees. Students will also play the role of Members to experience the passage of a bill in a mock Council debate.

First launched by the Secretariat in 2013, the internship programme is held annually during the summer vacation of students.
