BD investigates into rooftop metal frame collapse in City University
**********************************************************

The Buildings Department (BD) is investigating the collapse of the rooftop metal frame of the Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall of the Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre at the City University of Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong today (May 20).

The BD received a notification from the Fire Services Department at around 3.30pm today about the collapse of the rooftop metal frame. The BD officers immediately conducted an investigation upon arrival at the scene. It was found that a rooftop metal frame, measuring about 35 metres by 40 metres, had collapsed.

The concerned building has been closed for further investigation and clearing-up. Preliminary inspection revealed no obvious structural danger in the unaffected parts of the building.

According to the BD's record, an occupation permit was granted to the concerned building in January 1990. The BD has not received any application for alteration and addition (A&A) works for the concerned building recently.

The BD will continue to follow up the incident with the university. The BD will investigate the cause of the collapse of the rooftop metal frame in a number of areas. They include the record of building plans of the concerned building (including the original design and loading of the concerned rooftop metal frame and any previous records of A&A works), the thickness and weight of the covering on rooftop, the drainage systems of the rooftop; and the structural condition of the collapsed metal frame.
