Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, at a media session after the passage of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Bill 2016 in the Legislative Council today (May 19):

Reporter: Do you think this (the granting of university status) to HKIEd (Hong Kong Institute of Education) came quite late?

Secretary for Education: I believe that through these almost 10 years' effort, the HKIEd has been able to make a lot of improvements, including the academic and curriculum quality, in terms of research capability, and also with more positive feedback from principals of schools and so on. So I believe this is an ongoing effort and a continued improvement leading to today's approval from the LegCo at the third reading as well as the passage of the whole ordinance.

Reporter: Is it quite late, coming 10 years afterwards?

Secretary for Education: As I said, it is an ongoing process, and the Institute has been making a lot of efforts, not only the management, the professional teachers and lecturers but also the students and alumni and so on, and the whole community. So this is a collective effort making the success today. Thank you.
