May 2016 issue of Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 16) the May 2016 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains three feature articles entitled "Port Transhipment Cargo Statistics, 2005 to 2015", "The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2015" and "Crime Statistics in 2015". Statistics presented in the "Crime Statistics in 2015" article are based on the data source from the Hong Kong Police Force.

"Port Transhipment Cargo Statistics, 2005 to 2015"

     Port transhipment cargo movements have contributed to the growth of port cargo throughput of Hong Kong. With an average annual rate of increase of 2.0% between 2005 and 2015, port transhipment cargo movements took up 51.8% of port cargo throughput in 2015. In particular, port transhipment cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for the largest share (39.8%) of Hong Kong's port transhipment cargo. About 72.4% of Mainland-Hong Kong port transhipment cargo movements were between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region.

     This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the port transhipment cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2005 to 2015.

"The Profile of the Unemployed Population in Hong Kong in 2015"

     The labour market remained generally stable in 2015. The number of employed persons increased slightly from 3 801 100 in the first quarter (Q1) to 3 803 900 in the fourth quarter (Q4). On the other hand, the size of the labour force decreased slightly from 3 928 400 in Q1 to 3 925 500 in Q4. Over the same period, the number of unemployed persons decreased from 127 300 to 121 600. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained relatively steady at 3.2% to 3.3% in 2015.¡@This feature article provides an analysis of the unemployed population in 2015 from various perspectives. It aims to give readers a better understanding about the unemployed population in Hong Kong.

"Crime Statistics in 2015"

     According to the data source from the Hong Kong Police Force, the overall law and order situation in Hong Kong remained stable in 2015. The overall crime figure continued to decline since 2006 and the 2015 overall crime figure recorded a new low since 1979.  The violent crime figure also continued to drop since 2007 and the 2015 violent crime figure marked a new low since 1971. This feature article aims to give an overview of the latest crime statistics in 2015.
