The Government today (April 29) announced that the Chief Executive, in his capacity as the Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), had accepted the nomination of the CUHK Council and appointed Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang as Chairman of the CUHK Council for a term of three years with effect from May 1, 2016. Dr Leung is currently a member of the CUHK Council.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, welcomed the above appointment.

"Dr Leung is a prominent community leader who has all along been committed to public service. Having served in positions including Chairman of the Council of the City University of Hong Kong and member of the University Grants Committee, he has a wealth of experience in the education sector. Dr Leung has made exemplary contributions to the Hong Kong community and is widely recognised for his vision and distinguished leadership. I am confident that he will lead the CUHK to pursue excellence and scale new heights," Mr Ng said.

Mr Ng also paid tribute to Dr Vincent Cheng, the immediate past Chairman of the CUHK Council.

"During his tenure as member and Chairman of the CUHK Council over the years, Dr Cheng contributed tremendously to the sustainable development of the CUHK. Under his leadership, the CUHK further consolidated its position as one of the world's top-notch universities, continued to excel in both teaching and research, and took forward such major projects as the development of a teaching hospital, making remarkable achievements on various fronts. On behalf of the Special Administrative Region Government, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr Cheng for his relentless contributions," he said.
