***********************************************************

Following are the opening remarks by the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, at the award presentation ceremony of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme today (April 21):

Bernard (Chairman of the Awardee Selection Committee of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme, Mr Bernard Chan), Raymond (Group General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of HSBC Asia Pacific, Mr Raymond Cheng), Joseph (Chairman of the Administration Committee of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme, Dr Joseph Lee) and Rosanna (Executive Director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Dr Rosanna Wong), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

     Good morning.

It is indeed my great pleasure to be here today, and to share the joy of 25 brilliant young people who will receive the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award today.

This Scholarship Award Scheme is in its sixth year and 125 outstanding students have received the scholarship so far. Apart from doing well academically, the awardees have actively participated in community service. I am glad that their dedication to science and technology and passion for Hong Kong have led over 80 per cent of them to pursue a career related to innovation and technology. This is encouraging as our talents and human capital are essential for the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong.

The continued success of this Scheme is the result of long-standing collaboration between the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, HSBC and the Hong Kong SAR Government. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to HSBC for its commitment and generous sponsorship, and to the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups for its great efforts in implementing the Scheme.

I would also like to thank the contributions of the Awardee Selection Committee and the Award Scheme Administration Committee, chaired by Mr Bernard Chan and Dr Joseph Lee respectively, and many partners and advisers who have given their valuable time and advice in the selection process. My gratitude also goes to all the Mentors of the Scheme, who have provided their advice and guidance to generations of awardees even after their graduation. Your dedicated efforts are deeply appreciated.

One of the priorities of the Innovation and Technology Bureau is to inspire the younger generation to pursue a career in innovation and technology. This Scheme has contributed a lot in this aspect. Apart from recognising our young talents' excellence and dedication in the field of innovation and technology, the Scheme also exposes them to many possibilities and exciting prospects in the world of innovation and technology. Through overseas and Mainland attachments, internship opportunities, mentorship and participation in community service projects, awardees can learn from prominent scientists, entrepreneurs and professionals. The experience and guidance gained throughout the programme would play a significant role in their future to come.

Last but not least, my heartiest congratulations to all the awardees. Please make the most out of the learning opportunities in the months to come. For each awardee, I also hope you will become a role model for Hong Kong's future generations of young scientists and innovators.

     Thank you.
