Building Safety Week 2016 launched (with photos)
************************************************

Building Safety Week 2016, which is organised by the Buildings Department, was launched today (April 16). Featuring diverse activities, the event aims to help members of the public better understand building safety messages and foster a building care culture.

Addressing the opening ceremony at MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok today, the Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands), Mr Michael Wong, said there are many buildings in Hong Kong and the city is facing the problem of ageing buildings. In promoting building safety, apart from the Government's efforts, there is a need to foster a building safety culture in society in the long run so that all stakeholders would attach importance to building safety on their own initiative. Mr Wong encouraged the public to participate in the activities of Building Safety Week 2016.

The opening ceremony featured many interesting activities and the highlight was the Secondary School Drama Competition. Six finalist teams from six secondary schools demonstrated their capability to disseminate building safety messages to the public through drama performances. The Director of Buildings, Mr Hui Siu-wai, presented awards to the champion team and winners of Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. Prizes were also given to other teams with outstanding performance.

The opening ceremony also featured a building safety fun fair, a chat with building surveyors and structural engineers, and the Building Safety Certificate Course Certification Presentation Ceremony.

Buildings Safety Week 2016 runs from today to April 22, featuring a series of activities to promote building safety. Programme highlights include public talks, seminars for building professionals, the Building Safety Symposium, and the "Building Safety Pioneers Headline" TV programme which will be broadcast on Cable TV.
