Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra to perform in "When Violin Meets Ballet" concerts

     The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will perform two concerts in May entitled "When Violin Meets Ballet" to feature violin work by Dr Yip Wai-hong and ballet music from East and West. Music lovers can expect the Orchestra and the ballet dancers to deliver stunning performances of these musical works.

     Music director and composer Dr Yip, guest conductor Fan Tao and violinist Andrew Ling, as well as ballet dancers Peggy Lai and Leung Chun-long, will also take part in the performance.

     Among the works in the programme are Dr Yip's "Violin Concerto"; excerpts from Wu Zuqiang, Du Mingxin, Wang Yanqiao, Shi Wanchun and Dai Hongwei's "The Red Detachment of Women Suite"; excerpts from Yan Jinxuan's "The White-haired Girl Suite"; and excerpts from Tchaikovsky's suites "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker".

     Dr Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator. He served at the Hong Kong Baptist University as the Head of the Music and Fine Arts Department for almost 30 years. He founded the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Children's Choir, Yip's Children's Choir and the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra with the aim of nourishing young talents in Hong Kong.  

     Guest conductor Fan Tao holds the rank of National Class One Conductor in China. He graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied composition and conducting under the noted conductor and teacher Huang Xiaotong, as well as under renowned conductor and educator Phillip Spurgeon in the United States. At the International Sibelius Conductors' Competition held in Finland in May 2000, Fan was awarded a special prize, donated by the Sibelius Estate, which enabled him to receive a masterclass with Esa-Pekka Salonen.

     A native of Hong Kong, Andrew Ling is currently the principal violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and an adjunct faculty member of the Hong Kong Baptist University and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In the past, Ling assumed the role of concertmaster at the Indiana University (IU) Concert Orchestra and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and was the principal violist of the IU Philharmonic Orchestra.

     Born in Hong Kong, Peggy Lai studied ballet at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She joined the Hong Kong Ballet as a member of the Corps de Ballet in 2012. Leung Chun-long graduated from the Secondary School of the Beijing Dance Academy in 2009 and further studied at the School of Dance of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2011, majoring in ballet. After his graduation in 2011, he joined the Hong Kong Ballet as a member of the Corps de Ballet and was promoted to coryphée in 2014.

     "When Violin Meets Ballet" by the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The concerts will be staged at 8pm on May 6 (Friday) at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall, and at 8pm on May 7 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
