LegCo Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene concludes duty visit in San Francisco (with photos)

     The delegation of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene concluded its duty visit in San Francisco, the United States (US) yesterday (March 11).

     The delegation concluded the last day of its duty visit by meeting with representatives of the Infant Nutrition Council of America to learn more about the US experience in ensuring safe and adequate nutrition for infants and young children, as well as controls on relevant food products.

     The delegation then visited the SoMa StrEat Food Park to further understand the experience in operating food trucks in San Francisco.  Delegation members also attended a luncheon hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, San Francisco.

     Before departing for Hong Kong, Mr Tommy Cheung, leader of the delegation, described the duty visit to San Francisco as fruitful.  "Through on-site visits and discussions with relevant government officials, we have obtained a deeper understanding of the operations of food truck in San Francisco.  It facilitates our discussion with the Government on Hong Kong's food truck pilot scheme. In addition, we know more about the regulatory control of imported food products in the United States during this visit," said Mr Tommy Cheung.

     The delegation, conducted a duty visit in San Francisco from March 9 to March 11, is led by the Chairman of LegCo Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Tommy Cheung.  Other members include the Deputy Chairman of the Panel, Mr Steven Ho;  Dr Kwok Ka-ki, Mr Sin Chung-kai and Dr Helena Wong who are Panel members, as well as Mr Charles Mok and Mr Chung Kwok-pan who are non-Panel Members.

     During this visit, the delegation met with officials of San Francisco Planning Department, San Francisco Department of Public Works and San Francisco Department of Public Health, to seek a better understanding of their experience in the regulation of food trucks.  The delegation also met with representatives of the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Agriculture, and the US Customs and Border Protection to learn more about issues relating to food safety and surveillance of imported food at ports of entry. In addition, the delegation conducted site visits to food trucks to understand their day-to-day operations.
