"From Dunhuang Mural to Chinese Architecture - Tradition and Development" exhibition opens today (with photos)

     The "From Dunhuang Mural to Chinese Architecture - Tradition and Development" exhibition opened today (March 1) at the Exhibition Gallery of Sha Tin Town Hall. The exhibition will share with visitors the arts and culture of the traditional Chinese architecture in Dunhuang and Sha Tin.

     The officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui; the Deputy Director General of the New Territories Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ms Yang Xiaochan; the Chairman of the Sha Tin District Council (STDC), Mr Ho Hau-cheung; the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho; the Vice Chairman of the STDC and Honorary Advisor of the Sha Tin District National Education Committee (STDNEC), Mr Thomas Pang; the Chief-of-Staff (Vice-President) of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), Professor Paul Lam; and the Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre of CityU, Professor Li Hsiao-ti.

     Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Hui said the exhibition is the highlight of a series of activities being held by the STDNEC to promote the culture of Chinese architecture. Featuring models of traditional Chinese architecture re-created by the Gateway Education Laboratory of CityU using 3D printing technology, along with aerial videos of Che Kung Temple and Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre, the exhibition introduces the history and cultural value of the traditional Chinese architecture in both Dunhuang and Sha Tin. Collections of Dunhuang murals from the Dunhuang Academy and wooden architectural structures from Chi Lin Nunnery are also on display to showcase the profound traditional Chinese architectural arts and culture.

     The exhibition will be held from 10am to 8pm until March 12. Free guided tours and two seminars on traditional Chinese architecture on March 3 and 9 are available. Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition for free.

     Organised by the STDNEC, the exhibition is assisted by the Sha Tin District Office (STDO) and the Chinese Civilisation Centre of CityU and sponsored by the STDC and the Sha Tin District Community Fund.
