**********************************************************

Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (HKGP), the Sai Kung Food and Beverages Association and Sai Kung Chamber of Commerce recently organised the first Hong Kong Global Geopark Gourmet Competition, offering an enriched experience for geopark visitors while also encouraging sustainable social and economic development among the community.

As a token of appreciation, the Acting Assistant Director (Country and Marine Parks) of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Patrick Lai and the Chairman of Sai Kung District Council, Mr Ng Sze-fuk today (February 29) presented certificates to representatives of the participating restaurants.

A number of attractive dishes with a geological theme and prepared in Eastern and Western cooking styles were created by chefs from 11 competing restaurants from Sai Kung and a Geopark hotel. To help the chefs design creative cuisine matching the geopark theme, staff from HKGP offered their suggestions.

After tasting the dishes, the competition judges expressed their appreciation. For their part, the participating chefs said they were pleased to work with other stakeholders to promote their cuisine and HKGP at the same time.

A spokesman for HKGP said, "HKGP is not only committed to geo-conservation, but also plays an active role as a co-ordinator to promote local engagement in accordance with the goals set by the UNESCO.

"With local restaurants actively involved in the promotion of geopark gourmet, Sai Kung Town is a successful example of local engagement. The competition would not have been such a success without the support of the community and stakeholders.

"We will continue to work on new projects that seek to offer an enriched experience for geopark visitors and provide new impetus for the local economy to foster sustainable social and economic development."

Details of the Hong Kong Global Geopark Gourmet Competition and the entries are available on the website (www.geopark.gov.hk/en_s4a.htm).
