Speech by S for IT at "Re-Industrialisation - Impact and Opportunities for Hong Kong" Conference (with photo)
*********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, at the TecONE signature event "Re-Industrialisation - Impact and Opportunities for Hong Kong" Conference today (February 22):

Since there are quite a few non-proficient Chinese speakers here, non-Cantonese speakers, I will just use English to summarise what I just spoke.

First of all, re-industrialisation is not only a good thing to consider but likely a necessary thing to consider. For a long time, Hong Kong has thrived at the top of the world in light manufacturing. This included, for example, shirt-making, toys and logistics. The new technology today is no longer just Internet or e-commerce but involves new ideas such as big data, Internet of Things and cloud computing and they together will change the landscape of manufacturing.

I am happy to see that TecONE is addressing these critical issues and re-industrialisation and then embracing advanced ideas such as "Industry 4.0" and also "Made in China 2025". Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks further focuses on robotics, healthy ageing and smart city, giving Hong Kong three very clear directions to head towards to.

Today is the Lantern Festival, on the 15th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and I would like to wish everybody a happy Chinese Valentine's Day and then the best wishes for Year of the Monkey.
