CS cheers for Hong Kong cycling athletes at world cup event (with photos)

     The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (January 17) cheered for the Hong Kong Cycling Team athletes who participated in the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Track Cycling World Cup, a world-class event hosted in Hong Kong for the first time at the Hong Kong Velodrome (HKV).

     Mrs Lam, accompanied by the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Mr Raymond Fan; and the Commissioner for Sports (Designate), Mr Yeung Tak-keung, visited HKV to show full support for the great event.

     Mrs Lam visited the Hong Kong Cycling Team and thanked their head coach, Mr Shen Jinkang as well as other members and staff of the Team for their dedication in obtaining good results for Hong Kong. She also took the opportunity to chat with local cyclist Miss Lee Wai-sze and renowned rider from the United Kingdom, Mr Mark Cavendish.

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, also visited HKV this evening to support the athletes and present the prizes for the Women's Keirin event and World Cup Round Winner.

     The UCI Track Cycling World Cup event has been awarded "M" Mark status by the Major Sports Events Committee and is part of the "Appreciate Hong Kong" activities. Competitions participated by over 300 elite cyclists from 39 countries and regions, is held for three days at HKV from January 15 with a full-house attendance this afternoon. A number of visiting teams praised the HKV as a world-class facility of the highest standard.

     Opened in April 2014, the HKV is the first indoor cycling facility in Hong Kong that meets the standards of the UCI to provide a local, fixed and quality training base for the Hong Kong Cycling Team. It is also a venue which is well suited to hosting large-scale and high-level track-cycling competitions.
