The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will send 26 athletes to participate in the 13th National Winter Games (NWG), to be held in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late this month. The Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs Betty Fung, presented the HKSAR flag to the HKSAR Delegation today (January 6).

The Chairman of the Organising Committee of the HKSAR Delegation to the 13th NWG, Mr Timothy Fok, accompanied by the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the HKSAR Delegation, Mr Tony Yue, received the HKSAR flag from Mrs Fung.

Speaking at the flag presentation ceremony held at Mega Ice, Kowloon Bay, Mrs Fung said that while Hong Kong does not have a favourable natural environment for developing winter sports due to its subtropical location, with their perseverance, determination and "can-do" spirit, Hong Kong's athletes will be able to compete with top-notch Mainland athletes in the NWG, which is invaluable. She said she believes that the HKSAR Delegation will strive to do its best and fight for its goals with passion. She wished the delegation every success.

After the ceremony, the guests and the delegation watched a demonstration by Hong Kong junior ice hockey players and figure skating athletes.

The NWG, held every four years, is the country's largest elite winter multi-sports event, and aims to train sports talents and enhance the country's standard in winter sports. More than 50 delegations including those from the Hong Kong and Macau SARs will take part in the 13th NWG, making it the biggest in scale with the largest number of participating delegations in its history. This is the fifth occasion that the HKSAR will have taken part in the NWG since 1999.

Organised by the General Administration of Sport of China, the 13th NWG will be held in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region between January 20 and 30. The 26 Hong Kong athletes will take part in five final competitions, namely short track speed skating, figure skating, alpine skiing, and two competitions for the first time - women's ice hockey and freestyle skiing (moguls' event). The delegation will be accompanied by 12 coaches and officials.
