*********************************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, started his first day of duty visit in Berlin yesterday (November 30, Berlin time) where he aims to discuss energy saving and energy efficiency with the German authorities.

Mr Wong first met with the Director General for Energy Policy (Heating and Efficiency) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi), Mr Thorsten Herdan, to discuss policies relating to energy saving. The BMWi's key energy policies include reducing greenhouse gases in Germany by 80-95 per cent by 2050 and reducing primary energy consumption by 50 per cent compared with 2008.

In the afternoon, Mr Wong met with representatives of a German multinational conglomerate, Siemens AG, to learn about its energy-saving partnership project with the City of Berlin authorities to reduce carbon emissions at the community level. The partnership project, involving a total of 164 buildings including schools, day-care centres, sport facilities, correctional facilities and universities, will help Berlin reduce its carbon emissions by 25 per cent a year over a 12-year contract period.

Mr Wong will continue his duty visit to Berlin today (December 1, Berlin time).
