The following is issued on behalf of the Commission on Youth:

The Commission on Youth (CoY) held a Youth Exchange Session at the Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre of the Education Bureau today (November 30). The President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Tony Chan, talked about his upbringing and his success stories as well as exchanged views with the young participants.

Professor Chan said that he grew up in A Kung Ngam, Shau Kei Wan, and completed his matriculation at Queen's College. He then continued his studies in the United States and started his career there. His experience demonstrates the efforts that teenagers had to make in the 1960s to strive for self-improvement at a time when education was not yet universal, necessities were in short supply and living conditions were often harsh. He expressed the hope that talking about his experiences would help inspire the young participants.

In his closing remarks, Professor Chan pointed out that there are limitations and challenges in every phase of life, but there are also opportunities. He reminded young people to try their utmost, adding that with determination and effort, anyone can break through such limitations and live a wonderful life.

The Chairman of the CoY, Mr Lau Ming-wai, said the Commission will continue to organise youth exchange sessions and invite representatives from the Government and advisory bodies or stakeholders on topics of concern to speak, so that young people will have more opportunities to exchange views with them.
