The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, today (November 22) congratulated Hong Kong information and communications (ICT) practitioners on capturing a total of 10 awards, out of 185 entries, at the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2015 held in Colombo, Sri Lanka -- the best award tally among the 14 participating economies.

The awards include one Grand Award and nine Merits in nine categories.

Mr Yang said, "Hong Kong teams have achieved remarkable results in the APICTA Awards, which is a prestigious award programme in the Asia Pacific region. Our ICT professionals and students have fully demonstrated their innovation, ingenuity and excellence in the contest.

"The Government attaches great importance to developing Hong Kong into a leading smart city in the Asia Pacific region. The Hong Kong ICT Awards, organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer since 2006, has become a major annual event for our ICT industry to recognise outstanding and innovative ICT inventions and applications."

As one of the initiatives to encourage and support Hong Kong's participation in overseas ICT competitions and awards, the Government has sponsored local student entrants and non-profit community organisations to participate in the APICTA Awards. This year, a total of 17 students and four members of non-profit community organisations received Government sponsorship for participating in the event.

The Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Allen Yeung, was the honorary head of the 55-strong Hong Kong delegation, leading the teams to compete in the contest held from November 18 to 22.
