The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, today (November 17) visited Guangzhou and met with the Director General of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, Mr Fang Jianhong, to introduce Hong Kong's latest cultural developments. They also discussed related future co-operation arrangements between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

Mr Lau said, "Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have potential and room for co-operation on cultural exchanges. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government always attaches importance to its connection with Guangdong Province, and hopes to promote regional development in culture and arts. During the 16th Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Co-operation Meeting this year, a number of key achievements of co-operation and new plans were announced, including the development of the Regional Museum Pass for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau and discussion on organising exhibitions on the Maritime Silk Road."

Since 2002, Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau have continually improved the platform for cultural co-operation. In particular, in 2014 the three places signed the second five-year plan of the "Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Exchange and Co-operation Development Plan 2014-2018 by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau", while Hong Kong and Guangdong also signed the "Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural Exchange and Co-operation Development Plan 2014-2018 between Hong Kong and Guangdong". The co-operation between Guangdong and Hong Kong focuses on six aspects, namely exchanges for performing artists and co-organisation of cultural programmes, exchange of cultural information, co-operation in museum services, co-operation and exchange in public libraries, intangible cultural heritage, and co-operation of cultural and creative industries.

Mr Lau later visited the Guangdong Museum. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Guangdong Museum have jointly organised various large-scale exhibitions in recent years, such as the "Historical Imprints of Lingnan: Major Archaeological Discoveries of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao" exhibition and the "Maritime Porcelain Road - Relics from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Museums" exhibition. The fourth Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Museums Professionals Forum will be held again next year and Hong Kong will once again be the host.

During his stay in Guangzhou, Mr Lau met with the Head of the Sports Bureau of Guangdong Province, Mr Wang Yuping, to exchange views on sports-related matters of mutual interest. Mr Lau will return to Hong Kong tonight.
