S for S visits Toronto (with photos)

     The Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, began his visit in Toronto on November 3 (Toronto time) by meeting officials from various government departments.

     On November 3, Mr Lai met with the Deputy Minister of Community Safety, Mr Matt Torigian, and the Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Stephen Rhodes, from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services of Ontario.

     He also visited the Immigration and Refugee Board, where he was briefed on its work of handling immigration and refugee matters.

     Mr Lai then travelled to the University of Toronto, where he met with a group of students. They were briefed on the various talent admission schemes in Hong Kong.

     In the afternoon, Mr Lai paid a courtesy call on the Acting Consul General of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Toronto, Mr Zhang Chuanbing.

     Afterwards, Mr Lai attended a dinner gathering with the Hong Kong community in Toronto during which he updated them on the latest developments of Hong Kong with particular reference to the Admission Scheme for the Second Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents, which was launched in May this year.

     On the following day (November 4, Toronto time), Mr Lai visited the Canada Border Services Agency to learn more about its work on border and immigration enforcement as well as customs services.

     At noon, Mr Lai spoke at a business luncheon co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) and the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association. He briefed the attendees, who were representatives of business, professional and youth bodies, on the latest developments in Hong Kong.

     He then visited the Refugee Law Office of Legal Aid Ontario to learn about the legal assistance provided to refugee claimants and immigrants who are eligible for legal aid.

     Mr Lai will depart for Vancouver this afternoon (November 5, Toronto time) to begin the second leg of his visit to Canada.
