Sustainable Slope Landscaping Award commends excellent slope landscaping works (with photos)
************************************************************

The Sustainable Slope Landscaping Award Presentation Ceremony organised by the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) was held today (October 30) to commend excellent landscaping works for man-made slopes and natural hillsides and the contributions of the landscaping and engineering industries. It also marked the fifth anniversary of the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme under the GEO.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Daniel Chung, said "Since its launch in 2010, the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme has been systematically dealing with substandard man-made slopes and vulnerable natural hillsides to minimise the landslide risk.

"We have also been striving to promote slope greening and landscaping. For example, the GEO published guidelines on landscape treatment for slopes in 2000 and an updated edition in 2010 to provide reference for the industries. Over the years, the office has also been improving techniques on slope landscaping design in a bid to enhance the sustainability of slope greening and landscaping with consideration of ecological development."

The co-organisers of the Sustainable Slope Landscaping Award are the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau, the Conservancy Association, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong. The Award is divided into two categories, namely the Man-made Slope/Retaining Wall Category and the Natural Terrain Catchment Category. A total of 27 slope projects under the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme were nominated.

The judging panel, comprising representatives from the GEO and the co-organisers, found that all the nominated projects demonstrated good slope landscaping techniques. It was particularly impressed by the winning entries for their integration of ecologically sustainable features.

The list of the winning entries and information about the Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme can be found at the GEO's Hong Kong Slope Safety website (hkss.cedd.gov.hk).
