The Secretary for Justice, Mr Rimsky Yuen, SC, will visit New York and Washington, DC, the United States (US), from October 28 to November 4 to promote Hong Kong as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre in the Asia-Pacific region and update the local community on Hong Kong's latest developments.
While in New York, Mr Yuen will speak at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute of Columbia University on the theme of the Basic Law under the "one country, two systems" principle. He will also speak at a reception jointly hosted by the New York International Arbitration Center and the Hong Kong Association of New York and address a luncheon organised by the American Foreign Law Association. In addition, he will meet with the National Committee on US-China Relations to update them on the latest developments of "one country, two systems".
During his stay in Washington, DC, Mr Yuen will deliver a keynote speech at a Hague Conventions conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Hague Service Convention and the 45th anniversary of the 1970 Hague Evidence Convention. He will also speak at the Georgetown University Law Center on the role of Hong Kong as a centre for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region.
He will meet with senior government officials and leaders in various sectors, including the Deputy Attorney General of the US, Ms Sally Yates; the President of the American Bar Association, Ms Paulette Brown; the Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy under the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Mr Cory Gardner; and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific under the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Mr Matt Salmon.
Mr Yuen will return to Hong Kong in the morning of November 6.
