The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

"Rehome & Reuse Resources" is the theme of this year's "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 9 community environmental education programme that the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) has launched in partnership with Friends of the Earth (HK), the Conservancy Association and the Business Environment Council.

Officiating at the ceremony to launch the new phase, the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Housing) cum Director of Housing, Mr Stanley Ying, said today (October 9) that the programme has raised the environmental awareness and participation of residents, and nurtured a green atmosphere in the public housing estates.

In the past eight phases, the HA collaborated with green groups to organise environmental activities with different themes, including a plastic bottle recycling campaign, plastic bag reduction, a waste separation promotion scheme, green living carnivals, talks and workshops on waste reduction, green visits, exchange of second-hand goods, quizzes and more. Around 20 000 residents and students have been trained as Green Estate Ambassadors to promote green messages and activities to other residents with a view to building a green and healthy living environment for the community.

Maintaining last year's target of Reduction of Municipal Waste, the "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 9 programme will include a large-scale campaign with the theme of "Rehome & Reuse Resources" and a range of in-depth environmental education activities in HA's public rental housing estates this year. The activities aim to raise residents' awareness of waste reduction and recycling as well as to encourage them to share, reuse and save resources in their daily life.

Other officiating guests today included the Governor of Friends of the Earth (HK), Mr James Wong; the Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association, Mr Ken So; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Business Environment Council, Ms Agnes Li.
