***************************************************

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, paid a visit to the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) in Sha Tin this morning (October 7) to learn more about the latest developments and the training of athletes there. Mr Lau met with coaches and more than 70 athletes, who briefed him on their training in various sports and competitions. He also inspected the latest equipment and watched some sports demonstrations.

Mr Lau said, "The HKSI not only provides Hong Kong elite athletes with advanced training, supports sports science and offers medical treatment, but also caters to the educational and vocational needs of athletes. Over the years, the HKSI team has trained numerous elite Hong Kong athletes, who have brought home countless medals from international events. I hope that Hong Kong athletes will achieve even better results at the Olympic Games in Brazil next year and win more medals."

The Chairman of the HKSI, Mr Carlson Tong; the Chief Executive of the HKSI, Dr Trisha Leahy; and event representatives also showed Mr Lau some of the sports centres' equipment and told him about athletic training conditions, performance assessment, physical training programmes and medical support. In addition, Mr Lau visited the HKSI dormitory for athletes to view their living accomodation.
