***********************************************************

Young local huqin artist Chan Pik-sum will showcase her skills by playing a variety of compositions at a concert in October.      The programme will include "Nanyin Nocturnal Lament", "The Phoenix Terrace on Mount Yinhua", "The Regret", "Birds Returning to the Woods", "The Maiden Called Rainbow Dress" and "Meditation during Confinement in Sickness" along with the a cappella group Yat Po Singers.

Chan Pik-sum is active in both Chinese and Western musical genres, and has played with various leading orchestras. She has also performed in crossover productions of dance, Chinese traditional theatre and multimedia. She was one of the founding members of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble in 2003, and has been its concertmaster since 2011.

She was also coached by Wong On-yuen of erhu fame. Upon graduating from the Academy with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree, she furthered her music studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was awarded a Master of Arts (Music) degree.

Chan has served as huqin principal not only for the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble but also for the Academy Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra between 2004 and 2009. She has represented the Academy and other music organisations on tours to Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany, France, Malaysia, the Mainland, Taiwan and Singapore as soloist and ensemble member.
