*****************************************************

The Sha Tin District Clean Hong Kong Carnival cum Awards Presentation Ceremony was held today (August 23) at the Amphitheatre of Sha Tin Park. It is part of the Sha Tin District "Keep Clean 2015@Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, which aims to keep Hong Kong clean through the concerted efforts of the Government, local communities and the public. The carnival offers a great variety of activities including variety performances, game stalls, talks on cleaning and hygiene and a hand-cleaning competition.

Officiating guests at the ceremony included the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Chairman of the Sha Tin District Council (STDC), Mr Ho Hau-cheung; the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho; the Vice Chairman of the STDC, Mr Thomas Pang; the Cluster Chief Executive (New Territories East) and Hospital Chief Executive of Prince of Wales Hospital, Dr Hung Chi-tim; Legislative Council Member and the Chairman of the Health and Environment Committee of STDC, Dr Elizabeth Quat; the District Environmental Hygiene Superintendent (Sha Tin) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Mr Eric Tsai; the Chairman of the Sha Tin Rural Committee, Mr Mok Kam-kwai, and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Sha Tin District Primary School Heads Association, Mr Ng Shun-cheong.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lau said the Government launched the "Keep Clean 2015@Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign on August 1 to reinforce the concerted efforts of different sectors in the community and enhance public awareness of environmental hygiene.

He added that comprehensive cleaning work would be introduced in Sha Tin, including the co-ordination of anti-mosquito initiatives among governmental departments. Young volunteers will also be engaged in cleaning services for "three nil" buildings in the district and to visit elderly people living in those buildings and convey the message of keeping clean and show love and care to them.

To raise awareness of environmental hygiene among primary and kindergarten students, the STDC organised the 2015 Sha Tin District Clean Hong Kong Colouring Competition in July. Prizes were awarded at the ceremony and the winning entries were displayed.

After the ceremony, officiating guests and members of the STDC distributed cleaning packs to members of the public outside Sha Tin Park to promote the message of keeping Hong Kong clean.

The event was organised by Working Group on Cleanliness and Hygiene of Sha Tin District under the STDC and co-organised by the Sha Tin District Office.
