************************************************************

Four sets of site-specific and community-related artworks designed by local artists are being put on display from today (July 29) at four government buildings, located at Tuen Mun, Stanley, Tung Chung and Tai Kok Tsui, to share art in the community.

The launch party of the public art project, entitled ARTivating Public Buildings, was held today at the Stanley Community Hall, with officiating guests including the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Chairman of the Southern District Council, Dr Chu Ching-hong; the Chairman of the Islands District Council, Mr Chow Yuk-tong; the Chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, Mr Chung Kong-mo; the Chairman of the Finance, Administration and Publicity Committee of the Tuen Mun District Council, Mr Au Chi-yuen; the Director of the Community Art Network, Ms Grace Cheng; and the Head of the Art Promotion Office, Dr Lesley Lau.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Li said that the Art@Government Buildings project has already introduced works of art to 13 government buildings since it was launched by the Home Affairs Bureau five years ago. This year, the bureau has started the ARTivating Public Buildings project, bringing artworks to four government buildings. The project links art and the everyday life of the public, and provides platforms for local artists to display their work.

"Starting from today to July next year, members of the public can participate in various fringe activities such as guided tours and workshops in addition to appreciating the artworks," Ms Li added.

Li Tin-lun's work "Living Soundscape - Tuen Mun" for Lung Yat Community Hall has converted sounds recorded along the streets in Tuen Mun into visual structures, reflecting the rhythm and outlook of Tuen Mun. "Here the Ships" by Tang Kwok-hin in Stanley Municipal Services Building uses a treasure map and objects from daily life on a boat to narrate stories of Stanley and the sea. "Existence of the Void" by thecaveworkshop in Tung Chung Municipal Services Building utilises pavilions and empty seats to recreate the public space reconnecting people and the environment. Jino Yeung's work "Look at Tai Kok Tsui Step by Step" for Tai Kok Tsui Municipal Services Building features illustrations, photos and items collected from the neighbourhood to showcase life in Tai Kok Tsui.

During the exhibition period, each site will provide free guided tours with additional barrier-free facilities, as well as a variety of activities for the public.      The ARTivating Public Buildings public art project is presented by the Home Affairs Bureau, organised by the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and supported by the Home Affairs Department and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department with the Community Art Network as the programme co-ordinator. It aims to transform government buildings into art spaces. Local artists have been invited to tailor-make artworks for the government buildings involved so as to spread art into everyday life, give the public more opportunities to access art and offer a new experience for users and visitors of these buildings.
