Following is the speech by the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, at the Hong Kong Pulse 3D Light Show opening ceremony at Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui tonight (July 17):
Peter (Lam), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening, and welcome to hot town, welcome to Hong Kong.
If you are familiar with the line, "Hot town, summer in the city", then you probably grew up at about the same time as I did, some time in the last century. Yes, I am talking about that lovely tune by the Lovin' Spoonful.
Hot town, cool town, it is all happening in Hong Kong town this summer. And the return of the Hong Kong Pulse 3D Light Show has a lot to do with that. From tonight through to the second of August, the Light Show will light up Hong Kong four fabulous times per evening.
A multimedia spectacle, it melds marvellous technology with the natural splendour of our skyline.
This is the show's second year, created to amaze, created to showcase the wonder that is Hong Kong by the harbour to our citizens as well as to the tourists.
The first phase of the show's new edition coincides with the Tourism Board's new "Hong Kong Summer Fun" campaign. Running for 78 fun-filled days, the promotion is built around three of Hong Kong's favourite pastimes: shopping, dining, entertainment and hoopla.
With major support from our merchants, Hong Kong Summer Fun is packed with goodies. From Instant Mega Draws to enough prizes and giveaways to light up a summer to remember. Enough, I'm sure, to attract a world of overnight visitors to our shops, to our restaurants, entertainment parks and playgrounds.
Congratulations to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, which has managed this extravaganza so well, so successfully, since its launch last autumn.
The show is just a few minutes away. All I can say is this: prepare to be dazzled, prepared to be delighted. By the light. By the magic of this magnificent city. Hong Kong. Bringing you the summer of your life.
