A total of 587 primary students were appointed as Water Conservation Ambassadors to help promote water conservation at the seventh certificate presentation ceremony of the Water Conservation Ambassador Selection Scheme organised by the Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (July 10).

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Enoch Lam, said, "This year, the number of participants has increased by about 1,000 compared with last year, setting a record high of about 5,500 participants from 41 primary schools. Among the schools, 15 have joined the Scheme for at least five consecutive years to work together with the WSD to nurture a culture of water conservation among young students and lay the foundation for sustainable use of water resources.

"To strengthen co-operation with schools, we are planning to launch the Integrated Education Programme on Water Conservation to inculcate in students the importance of protecting water resources through diversified channels. We will also hold Water Conservation Week in mid-November to promote water conservation to different sectors of the community through activities including an exhibition, a seminar, a workshop and a carnival," he said.

The Water Conservation Ambassador Selection Scheme is a highlight of the "Water Conservation Starts from Home" promotional campaign launched by the WSD in all primary schools in the 2008/09 school year to encourage the young generation to treasure water resources. Based on the number of household members and data collected from participants on their domestic water consumption, those who have saved the largest amounts of water will be selected as ambassadors.

Also officiating at the ceremony today were the Assistant Director of Water Supplies (Development), Mr Lam Ching-man; the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Water Resources and Quality of Water Supplies, Dr Chan Hon-fai; the Chairperson of the Working Group on Public Education, Ms Tong Po-chun; the Chairperson of the Working Group on Publication of Water Quality Data, Dr Richard Cheung; and the Chairperson of the Working Group on Quality of Water in Buildings, Mr Ivan Lau.

The list of winning students and schools is available on the WSD's website (www.wsd.gov.hk).
