**************************************************

The Government announced today (July 7) that, in accordance with the Articles of Association of the MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) and as the majority shareholder, the Financial Secretary Incorporated has appointed Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang to succeed Dr Raymond Ch'ien Kuo-fung as the next Chairman of the board of directors of the Corporation with effect from January 1, 2016. The appointment is for three years until December 31, 2018.

Professor Ma was a non-executive director of the MTRCL from 2002 to 2007. He rejoined the Corporation in 2013 as an independent non-executive director.

The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, said that railways, being the backbone of Hong Kong's public transport network, play a vital role in serving the transport needs of Hong Kong. He expects that, under the future leadership of Professor Ma, the MTRCL will continue to grow from strength to strength and enhance its services to meet the needs of customers, while facing up to new challenges and meeting community expectations.

Professor Cheung said the Government highly appreciates Dr Ch'ien's invaluable contributions to the development of the MTRCL since he took up the Chairmanship in 2003. Under his leadership, the MTRCL has provided world-class railway services to the community while expanding its railway network and carrying an increasing number of passengers. The MTRCL has also extended its railway business overseas and on the Mainland, building up the Corporation as a well-known Hong Kong brand.
