Regarding media enquiries concerning the fire incident in New Taipei City of Taiwan, the Immigration Department (ImmD) today (June 30) responded as follows:
The ImmD is very concerned about the fire incident in New Taipei City of Taiwan, and has been following up with the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (Taiwan) (HKETCO).
On June 29, the ImmD assisted two of the injured to leave Taiwan for Hong Kong and Shanghai respectively for medical treatment according to the wishes of their families. The ImmD officers deployed in Taiwan will continue to visit the remaining injured Hong Kong residents there and assist their families.
In addition, the authorities in Taiwan have just notified the HKETCO that a sixth Hong Kong resident was identified among the casualties of the incident. The Hong Kong resident concerned is a female who has been living with her family in Taiwan and is now pursuing her studies there. After receiving the information, the ImmD officers have approached the victim's family and will visit her at the hospital this morning. Her family indicated that they have settled in Taiwan and received assistance from relevant local authorities after the accident. They expressed the wish to let the injured stay in Taiwan to receive further medical treatment.
The ImmD will continue to keep close contact with the HKETCO and the families of the victims to follow up on the incident and render practical assistance.
